How to export a WhatsApp chat (iPhone + Android)

Most people screenshot chats when they’re stressed. It’s slow, messy, and you miss context.
WhatsApp already has a cleaner option — Export Chat. You’ll get one simple .txt file you can search, save, or upload.

Why exporting beats screenshots

  • You don’t miss context. Screenshots skip the “before” and “after”.
  • It’s searchable. Find the exact line that’s bothering you.
  • It’s one file. Easy to save, send to yourself, or upload.
  • It’s faster. 2 minutes vs 40 screenshots and regret.

iPhone — export WhatsApp chat

  1. Open WhatsApp and open the chat.
  2. Tap the person / group name at the top (opens Chat Info).
  3. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media (required for Relationship Clarity).
  5. Save it to Files or send it to yourself (Email / AirDrop).

Tip: If you can’t find “Export Chat”, update WhatsApp and try again.

Android — export WhatsApp chat

  1. Open WhatsApp and open the chat.
  2. Tap the 3 dots (top-right).
  3. Tap MoreExport chat.
  4. Choose Without media (required for Relationship Clarity).
  5. Share/save the .txt file to Drive, Email, or Files.

Choose “Without media” (this is the one you need)

For Relationship Clarity, you want the words, not a huge zip file.

  • Without media: clean .txt file, faster export, smaller size, reliable upload.
  • With media: huge file, slower, often fails to send/share.

If your goal is to use Relationship Clarity, always export Without media.

Common issues (and quick fixes)

“Export Chat” isn’t showing

Update WhatsApp, then check Chat Info again. (Some UI labels change slightly by version.)

The file is too large

Choose Without media. If it’s still huge, export a shorter section (recent part) first.

I only have screenshots

No stress — but exports are cleaner. If you can, export the chat once and you’ll never go back.

Done? Here’s the next step.

If the chat is making your head noisy, upload the .txt export without media and get a private relationship clarity report. You’ll see what’s happening between you two — and what to do next, without spiralling.
